San Gerolamo (finito!)
Quando sarò capace di trasfomare in lettere la gioia di completare un quadro lo farò! Vi farò partecipi di quando il colore, perfettamente asciutto, è proprio quello che avrei voluto riprodurre. Di solito stendo la prima mano di colore, la seconda e la terza, poi vado via. Esco, faccio altre cose e, quando torno, non guardo subito la tela ma il colore rimasto nel piatto, guardo come ‘ha seccato’; solo dopo, butto un occhio distratto sulla tela… e lì, una semplice zona di colore, prende vita davanti ai miei occhi. Il San Gerolamo è come avrei voluto che fosse. Una ’sintesi’ del Santo, dove l’azione si estrinseca al di fuori della sua figura (come del resto in tutti i miei quadri) e diventa la proiezione dell’energia di un essere completamente proiettato nella sua attività. Il ‘qui e ora’.

When I manage to express in words the joy of completing a painting, I will! I will let you know when the colour, perfectly dry, is just the one I wanted. Usually, I paint the first layer of colour, then the second and third, then I go out and do something else. When I come back, I don’t look at the canvas immediately, but I look at the colour left in the palette, I look at how it’s “dried”. Only then do I cast a casual eye on the canvas, and there, a simple area of colour takes shape before my eyes. The San Gerolamo is just how I wanted it to be.
A “synthesis” of the Saint, where the action is expressed outside of his person (as with all my paintings) and becomes a projection of the energy of someone completely focused on his work. The “here and now”.
